Urgent measures needed to improve pedestrian safety on Ugandan roads

Pedestrian safety has become a pressing issue in Uganda, as recent reports from traffic police reveal a disturbing surge in fatalities. Shockingly, over half of the deaths resulting from road accidents in the week leading up to November 3, 2024, involved pedestrians.

In a bid to address road safety violations, 236 bodaboda riders in Kampala have been apprehended for operating without licenses.

During a briefing on November 11, Michael Kananura, the spokesperson for traffic police, underlined the gravity of the situation. He pointed to reckless driving, unsafe overtaking, and speeding as primary factors contributing to the escalating number of road accidents. Illustrating the dangers, a tragic incident on November 4 along the Bushenyi-Mbarara road resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries.

The week saw a series of fatal accidents, including an unsettling event on November 9 at Milo 10 on the Isingiro-Mbarara road. Here, a collision involving a Sino truck and a motorcycle led to the tragic deaths of the rider and passenger, followed by a devastating fire. Meanwhile, in Kiwanga, Mukono district, a collision involving a Subaru Forester, motorcycles, and an electric pole claimed the life of a police officer, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced safety measures.
